Launch of the Great British Space Dinner

10…9….8….7…6…5…4…3…2…1…lift off!

Yesterday (1st May 2014) The UK Space Agency launched a competition for school children between the ages of 7 and 14 to design a British-inspired, balanced and exciting meal for British ESA astronaut Tim Peake to eat during his 6 month mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The main proviso is the meal must be tasty! Astronauts eat dried, dehydrated food in a pouch that they add water too. It is routinely bland and uninteresting.  So Tim needs your help so he can eat something he will actually look forward to during his time in space.

The winning contestants will be invited to develop their ideas further with celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal, and these ideas will be turned into real space food that will be launched to the ISS. They will also be invited to an event that will include a live link up with Tim during his stay on the ISS.

So if you have a budding astronaut at home or know any wanna-be-astronauts,  this could be a great thing for them to do! It’s a fun way for kids to learn about food, learn about healthy food, get thinking about and be more involved in the food we eat.
